This was something I would not have had any trouble with a few years earlier, but now I do. And I realized that traveling definitely must have influenced this. Whereas immediately after returning I still thought I had learned nothing from my trip, over time I found that I had indeed learned things. More and more I noticed that I could trace things back to my journey. Thus, to my own surprise, I turned out to be slowly but surely quite cured of “lake syndrome. After a year, I turned in my leased car and started driving Greenwheels. While I would like to say that I did so purely for sustainability reasons, I will confess that that decision was primarily financially driven. Turning in my car keys gave me almost 1,000 euros (gross) per month. And what good is a big lease car if you live near work? I would have kept it purely as a status symbol, and I seemed to consider that less important after the trip.
